Pink Helmets (120/365)

2011 04 30 _MG_1384w
“Baseball is a red-blooded sport for red-blooded men. It's no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It's a struggle for supremacy, a survival of the fittest.”

Tyrus Raymond "Ty" Cobb (American, nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," was an American Major League Baseball outfielder, 1886–1961)

TIME:  3:59 PM
PLACE:  Little League Fields
SUBJECT:  T-ball batting equipment
(can you tell it’s a girl’s team?)

StellaDella was finally able to play her first T-ball game of the season this afternoon.  This year, they play a little more organized ball – they play positions and when batting, they can be called “Out” if the other team catches the ball, or makes the tag at the bases.  We played a boy team today and I do believe that the girls outperformed the boys in fielding this time.  We are supposed to make up a rain-out tomorrow afternoon if the rain holds off.

Birthday View (119/365)

TIME:  6:34 PM
PLACE:  Downtown
SUBJECT:  View from the courtyard
(photo taken by HandsomeHusband)

The HandsomeHusband and I went out to dinner for my birthday.  We ate at a Mexican restaurant downtown, then stopped by another bar/restaurant for a soothing adult beverage.  A friend of mine from high school owns this particular establishment – he is a year older, was a football player and a jock, sat in front of me in accounting class, and on many Mondays, he would turn around in his desk, smile charmingly and say “I had a game this weekend and don’t know how to do the homework, can you show me how?”  I always did.  We still joke about how much he owes me for saving helping him out back then.  I just say that drinks on the house are always an acceptable form of payment for his indebtedness to me.

Red Rosebud (118/365)

“We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon - instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.”

The butterfly rosebushes are beginning to bud and bloom.  I’m turning 44(!) tomorrow, May begins on Sunday, and in another 60 days the year will already be half-way gone.  I’m trying hard not to complain about the cold, rainy spring we are having and to just enjoy each day as it unfolds – it’s all going by so quickly.

What is that color in the sky?  And those white things?  Hmmmm, it’s been so long since I’ve seen them, I’m not sure what they are.  They do look nice reflecting on the building though.

More rain this afternoon led to a cancelled baseball game for MonkeyBoy tonight.  I managed to capture this image of the rarely seen HandsomeHusband as he left for an evening meeting.  Like the famous images of Bigfoot or Sasquatch (the creature that allegedly inhabits forests, mainly in the Pacific Northwest), this photo is blurry from the low light and movement of the subject.  But it’s the best I have to prove that the HH does indeed exist.

Easter Basket (114/365)

TIME:  7:17 PM

SUBJECT:  My Easter basket

You know you are old when an Easter basket filled with flowers makes you happier than one filled with chocolate – Or maybe it’s because only I know where all the overflow chocolate from the Easter Bunny is hidden.
~*~*~
I posted on Facebook earlier that we had a tragedy this Easter morn…the sea monkey aquarium was knocked over (accidently by DramaQueen) and all were lost.  SD was devastated.  To quote her wails – “Why did it have to happen on a holiday!” – “I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.”  Then a about 5 minutes later when she had calmed down - “Instead of sea monkeys, could we get something different?”

A Nose For Talent (113/365)

“It takes little talent to see what lies under one's nose, a good deal to know in what direction to point that organ.”

W. H. Auden (English born American Poet, Dramatist and Editor who achieved early fame in the 1930s as a hero of the left during the Great Depression. 1907-1973)

TIME:  6:26 PM
PLACE:  The brother’s kitchen
SUBJECT:  StellaDella and Shayne

We had a one-day-early Easter dinner with the family this afternoon at my brother’s.  After we ate, my niece, Brandi and DramaQueen hid eggs outside for the younger cousins to hunt.  The kids found all of them just as some rain storms came into the area again.  They came inside and played several games of Uno, while Aunt J. French braided The Shayne’s and SD’s hair.  Then, the two girls demonstrated what natural ability and talent they had by balancing spoons on their noses. ~*~*~ Oh, and do you see that third eye Miss Shayne has on her forehead?  That’s from her brother accidently hitting her with a golf club last week Sunday.  It won her a trip to the ER and some surgical glue.

Dorothy: [Reaches to pick an apple from the apple tree, the tree grabs the apple and slaps her hand] Ouch!
Apple Tree: What'd'ya think you're doing?
Dorothy: We've been walking a long ways and I was hungry and... did you say something?
Apple Tree: She was hungry! Well, how would you like to have someone come along and pick something off of you?
Dorothy: Oh dear! I keep forgetting I'm not in Kansas!

The Wizard of Oz. 1939. MGM. DVD.

TIME:  6:05 PM
PLACE:  Backyard
SUBJECT:  Face on a tree trunk

After supper, StellaDella told me that she wanted to show me something outside.  I asked if I needed to bring my camera…well, duh! Mom.  She directed me to the pine tree and explained the supplies used in her design.  Leaves for the eyes, a piece of corncob for the nose (she had to reach under the fence to get that) and painted mud for the mouth.  I’m glad I took a photo – we had big storms again this evening, so I’m sure that the face will not be there tomorrow morning.

“A is for apple, J is for Jacks, Cinnamon-toasty Apple Jacks! You need a complete breakfast, that’s a fact. Start it off with Apple Jacks. Apple Jacks! Apple Jacks! Ten vitamins and minerals-that’s what it packs. Apple-tasty, crunchy, too! Kellogg’s Apple Jacks!”

Kellogg’s Apple Jacks commercial jingle

TIME:  9:47 PM
PLACE:  Looking in the Apple Jacks bag
SUBJECT:  Apple Jacks

I sang those commercial lyrics to my children while they were eating the cereal.  They were not impressed neither with my ability to recall 1980’s Saturday morning cereal commercial lyrics without hesitation, nor with my singing voice.  They really do need to learn to humor their mother.  BTW I still love Apple Jacks…Froot Loops too, but the Froot Loops have a tendency to scrape the skin off the roof of my mouth, so I don’t indulge in those very often.

PLACE:  Our street
SUBJECT:  Car light trails

We had some severe weather beginning around 8:00 this evening.  I wanted to capture it but I didn’t have anything to protect my camera from the sideways rain.  Also, DramaQueen was slightly freaking out at the prospect of me being on the porch during the good part height of the storm.  So, after it died down, I stepped outside and set the camera on the porch railing.  A car drove by just as I pressed the shutter and I got a happy surprise – light trails.

TIME:  5:49 PM
PLACE:  Elementary school
SUBJECT:  Dearly departed rabbit

We had our bi-weekly Daisy meeting this afternoon.  The girls’ project today was beautifying the school by planting flowers in the beds surrounding the trees in front of the building.  While Miss Jody (our fearless leader) was prepping one of the beds for the girls to plant, she came across a bunny…Dum dum dummmm!…a dead bunny.  !  The girls were fascinated and horrified by it at the same time.  They wanted to give it a funeral and bury it in the flower beds, but Miss Jody and I nixed that idea.  In the end, she placed it in a plastic flower pot and disposed of it in the dumpster.  RIP bunny rabbit.

Bugs Bunny: My, I bet you monsters lead interesting lives. I said to my girlfriend just the other day - Gee, I'll bet monsters are interesting, I said. The places you must go and the places you must see, my stars! And I'll bet you meet a lot of interesting people, too. I'm always interested in meeting interesting people. Now let's dip our patties in the water!

Hair-Raising Hare. Dir. Chuck Jones. 1946. Warner Bros. Pictures.

TIME:  4:33 PM
PLACE:  Kitchen
SUBJECT:  DramaQueen painting my nails

DQ, StellaDella and I went to Target to pick up a few things and DQ talked me into buying her a new bottle of nail polish – Sally Henson Hi-Definition Nail Color #14 “Spectrum”.  When we got home, she then talked me into letting her paint my nails with the new turquoise color.  Why not?  I haven’t had a manicure in a couple of years. ~*~*~ And FYI? I hate - HATE! - the term “mani-pedi.”  In fact, just typing it gave me the heebee jeebees.  Why? Well, because to me, “pedi” sounds like the plural of “pedophile,”  Ick-y.  I know it’s standard for the industry, but I will just continue to say the entire word and not the shortened, “cute” version thankyouverymuch.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery (French Pilot, Writer and Author of 'The Little Prince', 1900-1944)

TIME:  4:31 PM
PLACE:  Front yard
SUBJECT:  Rocks

Sunday, while visiting Dana in Podunk, I noticed that there was quite the plethora of rocks laying about the farm fields.  I mentioned that fact to HandsomeHusband.  He said that they are from frost heaving (the upward dislocation of soil and rocks by freezing and expansion of soil water…he didn’t say that part – I looked up the official definition), farmers hate them (they ruin equipment) and are usually granite brought south by glaciers eons ago.  Granite? Glaciers? Extremely old?  That did it, I wanted one.  While we were taking pictures, I chose not one, but two rocks to come home with me.  HH was not too thrilled about having rocks in his Corvette, but nevertheless, he indulged me by placing them in a bag and gingerly setting them in the back of the car.

State Flower of Illinois (103/365)

2011 04 13 _MG_0901w
Look at us, said the violets blooming at her feet, all last winter we slept in the seeming death but at the right time God awakened us, and here we are to comfort you.”

Edward Payson Roe (American Pastor and Novelist, 1838-1888)

TIME:  6:38 PM
PLACE:  Front yard
SUBJECT:  Common Wood Violet, violaceae family

In 1907, a woman named Mrs. James C. Fessler from Rochelle, began a campaign to adopt a state flower of Illinois.  School age children were polled and given the following choices: goldenrod, wild rose or violet.  The violet swept the election with 16,583 votes.  That was almost 4,000 more than the children’s 2nd choice - the wild rose with 12,628 votes.  Poor goldenrod…it placed last with only 4,315 votes.  In January of 1908, the violet became the Illinois state flower via a bill sponsored by Senator Andrew J. Jackson of Rockford.  And thus concludes today’s State of Illinois official symbols history lesson.

Let Them Eat Butter Cake (102/365)

TIME:  4:24 PM
PLACE:  Kitchen
SUBJECT:  Breton butter cake

I was in a Suzy Homemaker mood this afternoon and decided to make a butter cake recipe from an old May 2002 Martha Stewart Living.  The recipe called for simple ingredients: butter, sugar, vanilla, eggs, flour and salt.  It was very dense and almost like a shortcake.  Martha topped hers with a spiked strawberry compote – but I just went with some fresh sliced strawberries sprinkled with brown sugar.  The kids were going to be eating it and frankly, I like to consume my alcohol directly from some sort of drinking apparatus.

PLACE:  Driveway
SUBJECT:  Body damage on the Corvette

So, yesterday, we were flying merrily down Highway 55 in HandsomeHusband’s pride and joy – his Corvette.  We had driven up to Podunk to visit with Miss Dana and had a lovely time.  We had been on the road for the return trip for about 3.5 hours.  I was just beginning to check my eyelids for leaks, and was almost in a Zen-like state, when I simultaneously heard HH swear and a big “CLUNK” of something metal being caught in the front wheel well and then bouncing off of the passenger side door.  Ugh…that’s not something you want to hear.  When he could, HH drove onto an exit ramp, pulled over on the shoulder and we both got out to assess the damage: Let’s see, we have a blemish on the front bumper; some minor damage to the wheel well and this: an ugly gouge on the passenger door.  Bum-mer.  Does anyone know a good auto body repairman who specializes in fiberglass?

PLACE:  Podunk, IL
SUBJECT:  Abandoned farmhouse

The HandsomeHusband and I abandoned left our kids (not really, my nephew sat for awhile and Grandpa made sure they didn’t starve at supper time) and drove up to Podunk to meet with Dana for some broasted chicken at the Chick-N-Dip.  It was great chicken and company.  After we ate, we all stopped by the Podunk library which was having a book sale (Dana snagged a 6-drawer card catalog…score!) and then we hit the country roads to find some photo taking opportunities.  This farm house fascinated me.  I just couldn’t choose one photo – so I went with five today.  And Dana? You’d better post some as well.  I know where you live woman! *evil laughter*

TIME:  1:24 PM
PLACE:  Market St. and Tucker, St. Louis
SUBJECT:  Looking east down Market

Last week I discovered that my paternal grandfather had been involved in an automobile accident with a buggy and was arrested back in 1922.  I had sent a letter to the St. Louis Police Dept. to see if I could find out any more information and they called me yesterday stating that they had located a 1-page report on the incident.  I went to the Police Station in downtown St. Louis to pick it up after work.  There wasn’t much in the report that wasn’t already in the newspaper, EXCEPT that it named the owner of the car my grandfather was driving.  The owner’s name was Vito Geonollo aka Vito Giannola  - a leader of “The Sicilian Green Ones” gang in St. Louis during Prohibition.  Hmmmm, was Grandpa a gang member?  Maybe this could be the reason there was tension between him and the rest of his family.  Back in the late 1980’s, I was visiting with him on a Sunday afternoon; he was in a talkative mood and casually mentioned that once he had some “trouble with guns” and had to “hide away for a few days”.  He wouldn’t elaborate anymore than that.  Grandpa passed away in 1989 while I was a senior at college.  I wish I could have spoken with him more – I have a feeling that he led a very interesting life as a young man.
