Advice from a Caterpillar (173/365)

20150622 IMG_681820150622 IMG_6825
“In a minute or two the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and yawned once or twice, and shook itself. Then it got down off the mushroom, and crawled away in the grass, merely remarking as it went, `One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.'

`One side of WHAT? The other side of WHAT?' thought Alice to herself.

`Of the mushroom,' said the Caterpillar, just as if she had asked it aloud; and in another moment it was out of sight.”

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Chapter V-Advice from a Caterpillar, Lewis Carroll

“It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.”
Dave Barry

Stella and I went camping with the Girl Scouts.
It was raining when we arrived.
And it rained off and on pretty much all day.

Stella found this guy in the bathhouse.

During one of the breaks in the rain, it stopped long enough for the girls to go canoeing.
Stella and her friend Devin paddled while I rode in the middle.

After we returned to shore, they gathered clay and mud from the shallow water.

A Fungus Among Us (126/366)

2012 05 05 IMG_3532w
“Not ringed but rare, not gilled but polyp-like, having sprung up overnight—These mushrooms of the gods, resembling human organs uprooted, rooted only on the air.”

William Jay Smith (b. 1918), U.S. poet. Morels (l. 12-13). . . Book of Nature Poems, A. William Cole, comp. (1969) The Viking Press.

TIME:  12:59 PM
PLACE:  Girl Scout camp
SUBJECT:  Mushrooms seen on a hike

After we arrived at camp, we had the girls stow their gear in the cabins, ate lunch and then we went on a scavenger hunt hike.  We had to find and take pictures of several different items one might see on a hike.  My charges, the Brownies (ages 8-9) ended up being one of the whiniest bunch ev-ver!  They moaned & groaned & complained about being hot, sweaty and tired from all that walking.  The other leader and I had to have a talk with them about the proper way for Girl Scouts to behave at camp and how anyone who complained would not be receiving their hiking badge nor would they be allowed to camp next year.  They straightened up and ended up having fun despite the heat & humidity.

SUBJECT:  Mario & mushroom

The kiddos were off school for Columbus Day today - the last of their 4-day weekend.  And what else did today bring?  A case of the gout for the ol’ HandsomeHusband…he says it is very painful…poor guy; and the purchase of a new lawnmower as our old one bit the dust and the grass doesn’t stop growing.  Before MonkeyBoy cut the backyard, I found this mushroom and decided that StellaDella’s Mario figurine would be perfect to photograph with it.

‘Shroom (221/365)

“I am... a mushroom; On whom the dew of heaven drops now and then.”

John Ford (English Jacobean and Caroline playwright and poet, 1586-1640)

TIME:  2:09 PM
PLACE:  Homer F. Stemler Memorial Walking Trail
SUBJECT:  Mushroom (unknown variety)

HandsomeHusband did some damage to his calf muscle at MB’s football practice on Saturday and spent much of today in bed with ice and heat packs placed upon it.  Poor guy!  DramaQueen had a birthday party to attend at the Millstadt pool from 1-6pm today.  I dropped her off and took MonkeyBoy and StellaDella to the Stemler Walking Trail in order to take pictures and to let HH rest his leg in relative peace and quiet.  It was daggum hot out there, let me tell ya.  And the spider webs across the trail were plentiful.  After about an hour and 15 minutes of hiking, we were all soaking with sweat and quite thankful for the air-conditioning in the car on the way home.
