Ohhh, Sparkly (361/365)

2010 12 27 IMG_6733w
“Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand-and melting like a snowflake...”

Francis Bacon, Sr. (English Lawyer and Philosopher. 1561-1626)

TIME:  3:19 PM
PLACE:  North side of the house
SUBJECT:  Icicle on Rose of Sharon branch

Back to the grind today.  I was sooo tired.  That’s what I get for staying up way too late and playing Peggle on the Xbox.  Stupid, addicting game cutting in on my sleep time – but I managed to muddle through work and made it back home without falling asleep at my desk.  After I ate a late lunch, StellaDella just had to show me the icicles she spied out of the window by my computer desk.  She thought it was so cool how the afternoon light made them sparkle.  They won’t be here much longer, we are expecting temps to hit the mid to upper 50’s along with some rain on Thursday.

Rose Of Sharon (226/365)

2010 08 14 IMG_2578w
“She was the rose of Sharon from paradise lost
From the city of seven hills near the place of the cross…”

Dylan, Bob, perf. "Caribbean Wind." Biograph. By Bob Dylan. Columbia Records, 1985.

TIME:  6:24 PM
PLACE:  Back yard
SUBJECT:  Hibiscus syriacus

We inherited several Rose of Sharon shrubs when we bought our house.  Three of them line the east side of the house and we also have one plant on the west side by the central air conditioning unit; which is where I took this photo.  The flowers attract large bumblebees all summer long…HH does not appreciate that aspect of the shrub.

I Said No Pictures! (192/365)

The bee that hath honey in her mouth hath a sting in her tail.

John Lyly (Lilly or Lylie) (English writer, best known for his books Euphues, The Anatomy of Wit and Euphues and His England, c. 1553 or 1554–1606)

TME:  6:32 PM
PLACE:  The side of the house
SUBJECT:  A pissed off bumblebee

The bumblebees just love my Rose of Sharon bushes that are planted on the side of the house.  They are busy burrowing in the flowers gathering the pollen with their butts sticking out between the petals.  But when they back-out and see my camera lens, apparently they can get a little testy.  I snapped this just before I made a hasty retreat due to an angry bee barreling toward my face.  I did not get stung, but I guess I do need to learn to pick more cooperative subjects in the future.
