SUBJECT:  Thrifted Denmark wooden candlesticks

My brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephews and the kids and I went on a hometown, downtown, thrifting/shopping adventure this afternoon.  At one store I found these wooden candlesticks for a quarter apiece.  They have a round paper label with “BRDR., RASMUSSEN, COPENHAGEN, MADE IN DEMARK – DANISH QUALITY” pasted on the bottoms.  The paint isn’t perfect, but since they are mid-century modern and were only 50 cents, there was no way I could pass them up.  Love those curves.

Life's just a merry-go-round. Come on up. You might get a brass ring.

SUBJECT:  Vintage Fisher Price Merry-Go-Round

This was my last day of Thursday freedom from work AND children until August when they return to school – so you know I didn’t spend it at home cleaning like I should have.  Oh no, no, no.  I ventured to the new Goodwill Outlet in St. Louis, where they sell by the pound and new crap goodies are wheeled out in huge plastic containers every twenty minutes.  *singsong voice*  I. was. in. heaven!  I found a nice Pyrex divided dish, some baseball cleats for StellaDella, several books, some vintage Christmas items, and a bunch of other tchotchkes I really didn’t need, all for the low, low price of $15.76.  That price included this toy as well – I remember seeing it in the Sears Christmas Wish Book as a youngster and thinking it was pretty nifty.  Funny, I don’t ever remember asking Santa for it though.  That could be why I never found it under the tree.

SUBJECT:  1992 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Here is my first “baby”.  I adopted her on June 13, 1992 when she was a young pup…only 22 miles on her.  I remember that day well, I was still living at home and my oldest brother came by and accompanied me to the dealership.  It was destiny - I wanted a yellow convertible and lo and behold they happened to have a single “Sunburst Yellow” Miata sitting on their lot.  SOLD!  I pretty much learned how to drive the manual transmission taking her for the test drive.  After I signed the papers and took my brother home, I drove the car to HandsomeHusband’s place.  I still remember his eyes widening with surprise when he saw the car.  We drove it that night on our dinner date.  The Miata has been immortalized in our wedding album and went with us on our honeymoon to New Orleans.  Beginning in late 1997, she was “retired” to 3rd car status due to the birth of DramaQueen.  With the addition of two other children, she doesn’t get driven as much as she used to.  However, if HH and I go somewhere individually or if we have just one kid with us or we go on our date nights, we try to take “Mom’s yellow car” when possible.  She has 120,680 miles on the old odometer now.  DQ says she had dibs on the car when she gets her driver’s license in 4 years.  I’m pretty sure that’s not going to happen – the “yellow car” is mine! ;)

I really was SuzyHomemaker today.  I ran several errands in the morning with the kiddos - Post Office, the newspaper to place the yard sale ad, City Hall to purchase a yard sale permit (our city requires one), the Library, Farm Fresh convenience store for our milk in glass bottles, the Farmer's Market for broccoli, carrots and nectarines, and the butcher for chicken breasts for dinner tonight.  Are you tired yet?  This afternoon, I went downtown by the library to meet a buyer for a Craigslist sale.  Then it was back home to make dinner.  We had Korean Grilled Chicken & Sesame Noodles with Vegetables.  For dessert I made Carrot-Ginger Cupcakes - the recipe courtesy of Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook.  The cream cheese icing is straight from my trusty Betty Crocker cookbook.  DramaQueen made a face when I was mixing it up, but she tried the batter and changed her mind quickly.  I'm sure there are no calories in these cupcakes, the recipe only called for 1-1/2 cups of vegetable oil...do you think that the oil counteracted the health benefits of the 2-1/2 cups of shredded carrots that were in there?
Nah, I don't think so either.

It is Sunday and that means coupons in the Sunday paper! WooHoo! I recently reorganized my coupon binder for the supermarket. I plan to track how much I save this year using coupons. The grand total so far: $14.00
