“Sense how
Even the smooth stones ache
With stories of their own
In the shuddering light of day.”

Scott Hastie (Scot, author, b1954)

TIME: 6:33 PM
PLACE: Back yard
SUBJECT: Fence shadow on rock

It was overcast most of the day.
But a tiny bit of sun peeped out just long enough to cast this shadow.
Now it is storming.

Skull and Crucifix (255/365)

2011 09 12 IMG_4498aw
“When I found the skull in the woods, the first thing I did was call the police. But then I got curious about it. I picked it up, and started wondering who this person was, and why he had deer horns.”

Jack Handy (American Writer and cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1991-2003. Famous for his Deep Thoughts comedy sketches.)

TIME: 7:38 PM
PLACE:  Boy Scout Meeting Room
SUBJECT:  Deer skull and Crucifix

MonkeyBoy’s Boy Scout troop had a Court of Honor (earned ranks and badges are presented to the Scouts) this evening.  MB received the badges he had earned while attending summer camp - Archery, Canoeing, First Aid and Lifesaving.  The Court was held in the man-cave in the school basement where they attend their weekly meetings.  On one wall, there is a large faux fireplace with a stone façade and hearth.  Hanging from the top of the fireplace are the deer skull and the crucifix.  Why yes, they are a Catholic troop…how did you guess?

Written In Stone (202/365)

“The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong”

Thomas Carlyle (Scottish Historian and Essayist, leading figure in the Victorian era. 1795-1881)

TIME:  7:19 PM
PLACE:  Dining room
SUBJECT:  StellaDella’s garden sign

SD tearfully told me last night that “This was the worst summer ever!”  All because “…you broke your arm…last year we had a pool and now we don’t…I miss my friends from school…It’s a horrible summer!”  She actually cried herself to sleep.  Before she did that, I promised her that we would do something today.  This morning, I poked around in the basement and unearthed this garden sign kit that I had bought at a thrift shop earlier this year for only 50 cents.  Score!  She helped mix the mortar, and she designed the happy face with the rocks and gems.  At first she was going to make a handprint, but then decided that she would just make indentations for cheeks instead.  I did the lettering for her.  It should be cured and ready to be unmolded in two days.  I think (and hope) this made her a little happier with her summer vacation.

Mother’s Day Project (128/365)

“To the illumined man or woman, a clod of dirt, a stone, and gold are the same.”

Bhagavad Gītā (Sanskrit: भगवद्गीता, Kannada: ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ, IPA: [ˈbʱəɡəʋəd̪ ɡiːˈt̪aː], Song of God). Also more simply known as Gita, is a Sanatana Dharma or Hindu scripture produced from the colloquy given by Sri Krishna to Arjuna during the Kurukshetra War.

TIME:  7:42 PM
PLACE:  Front yard
SUBJECT:  Terracing

This is a project I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time – terracing around the Capital Pear tree in the front yard.  I even had my dad roped talked into helping out once I purchases the materials.  But - lucky him! – after my Mother’s Day breakfast, and the receiving of gifts from the children (earrings from DQ, a coupon book from MB and a 1st grade mother’s cookbook from SD) I mentioned to HH that I would like to do this and he agreed to help me build it today.  We went to a landscaping material and supply company and picked up the retaining blocks that matched the pavers I have around the front flower beds.  On the way home, we stopped my Mom’s grave and left a green hummingbird garden stake for Mother’s Day.  After we arrived home, it only took about 3 hours to build and, I am proud to say, HH and I did it without bickering…a first for us!  I’m loving how it turned out…HH does too.  Now I need to buy some annuals to plant in it next to the mum.
