Mr. Doorknob (025/365)

2010 01 25 IMG_3816w
Alice: [looking through the Doorknob's keyhole] There he is! I simply must get through.
Doorknob: Sorry. You're much too big. Simply impassable.
Alice: You mean impossible.
Doorknob: No, impassable. Nothing's impossible.

Alice in Wonderland. Directed by Clyde Geronimi and Wilfred Jackson. Written by Winston Hibler, adapted from the novels by Lewis Carroll. Walt Disney Productions.1951.

TIME:  7:05 PM
PLACE:  Living room
SUBJECT:  Doorknob face

Ever since my "Unhappy Toast" picture on Saturday, I’ve been keeping an eye out for faces in other inanimate objects.  This face in the doorknob was neither difficult, nor surprising to find.  Ever since I was young, even before I ever saw Alice in Wonderland, I always thought these types of doorknobs looked like faces and if I turned them too hard, they might yell at me.  I know, I’m strange.  HandsomeHusband would be the first to tell you that sometimes,  I’m just not right in the head.

Rock Lobster (314/365)

2009 11 10 IMG_2033
'Tis the voice of the Lobster; I heard him declare,
'You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair.'

Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832-1898), British poet. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. . ; pseud. of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson Oxford Book of Children's Verse, The. Iona Opie and Peter Opie, eds. (1973) Oxford University Press.

TIME:  7:01 PM
PLACE:  Knights of Columbus Council Hall
SUBJECT:  Lobster Dinner

Two local Democratic Clubs sponsored a Lobsterfest tonight and, as HandsomeHusband is in the political scene, we went to offer our support and eat some crustaceans.  Having been dragged under duress cheerfully accompanied him to many other political functions, I can honestly say that this was one of the better fundraising events I have attended.  We had freshly cooked Maine lobsters, corn, potatoes, and slaw (with feta cheese!).  Good stuff.  Thanks for taking me to this one honey…I enjoyed it!

Very Fuzzy Caterpillar (274/365)

 2009 10 01 IMG_0632
"Who are you," said the caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I—I hardly know, Sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have changed several times since then."

Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832-1898), British author, mathematician, clergyman. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, ch. V, Macmillan (1865).

TIME:  3:27 PM
PLACE:  The front porch
SUBJECT:  Caterpillar

I went with my sister Cathy to the St. Louis Library today to help wrangle my niece while she did some work for a class she is taking.   I was taking some pictures in front of the building as we left and a couple of guys asked what I was doing, so I told them about my project.  One of them asked to take his picture, so I did.  Then Cathy treated me to lunch at Crown Candy Kitchen for helping her.  Mmmmm - BLT’s with TONS of bacon and a Hot Fudge malt – the perfect lunch!   On the way home, I received a phone call from the school saying that MonkeyBoy  wasn’t feeling well, so we stopped by school  and brought him home.  He’s feeling a little better now, but is really tired.

StellaDella found this caterpillar after school and carried it cupped in her hands as she and DramaQueen walked home.  She really wanted to keep it as a pet and was disappointed when I wouldn’t let her.

“Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!
Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!
Beau—ootiful Soo—oop!
Beau—ootiful Soo—oop!
Soo—oop of the e—e—evening,
Beautiful, beautiful soup!”

Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832-1898), British author, mathematician, clergyman. The Mock Turtle, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, ch. X, Macmillan (1865).

TIME: 5:25 PM
PLACE: The kitchen table
SUBJECT: Minestrone soup

Today was Labor Day here in the USA (Canada and Bermuda as well) where we celebrate the social and economic achievements of the American worker. Normally the family walks in the Labor Day parade here in our town with HH’s union. The kids love it since they get to heave candy (mini tootsie rolls) all along the parade route, but since SD is still getting over her sickness, only HH and MB went to march this morning. I celebrated by doing laundry and going to the grocery store to get the ingredients to make this minestrone soup that was posted last November on Scribbit – Motherhood in Alaska. I loved it and HH declared that it “was pretty damned good soup,” so it will definitely be made again. I like soup and try to have it with homemade bread and salad a few times a month during the fall and winter season.

Back In My Snail Shell (189/365)

2009 07 08 IMG_7422
“Will you walk a little faster?” said a whiting to a snail,
“There’s a porpoise close behind us, and he’s treading on my tail. See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle--will you come and join the dance? Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

Lewis Carroll, (English Logician, Mathematician, Photographer and Novelist, 1832-1898), "Alice in Wonderland", Chapter X: The Lobster Quadrille

TIME:  8:20 PM
PLACE:  South Side Park
SUBJECT:  Snail in shell

An uneventful day.  I was able to get the first coat of paint on the porch steps.  I will get a second coat on tomorrow and a final coat on Friday.  More than likely, they will need to be repainted in the next 3 years...that's the nature of the beast.  Other than that - it was laundry today.  MonkeyBoy had baseball practice tonight and I was able to sit on my behind and watch sans other children.  It was rather peaceful.  Afterwards, he and I went to the nearby park to search for a photo opportunity.  MB and his sharp eyes found this snail for me to photograph.
