Cheers to Public Art (317/366)

TIME: 4:30 pm
PLACE: West Main & N 8th St
SUBJECT: Mural

*~*~*

The Belleville Mural Project is attempting to add more public art around our city.

This mural was just recently completed.  I was only able to take a quick snap of this one side on my recent drive-by. This mural actually wraps all around the building.  I like it.

Patron of the Arts (044/365)

TIME: 9:35 PM
PLACE: Home Sweet Home
SUBJECT: Vintage Paint-by-Number

I acquired this painting last year from our local thrift shop.

I was debating whether or not to purchase it – it was a bit higher than my price point.  Then I decided, “Screw it, I’ll regret it if I don’t buy it.”

Turns out, all framed pictures were 1/2 price that day – it only cost me $13.50

Sweet.

Chalk Swatches (012/365)

20171117_IMG_4818_e
TIME: 8:50 PM
PLACE: Living room
SUBJECT: Art chalk and sketchbook
StellaDella is experimenting with pastels tonight.
Before she begins drawing and sketching, she makes a swatch of each pastel color in her sketchbook.
That way she knows how the colors will look when she uses them  in her artwork.
The color swatches look like art too.

Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.
Robert Motherwell (American painter, printmaker, and editor.1915 – 1991)

TIME: 7:03 PM
PLACE:  Downtown
SUBJECT: Building art

This was known as the “Hole” for a number of years.
The building had burnt, was torn down by the city and the remaining clean-up responsibility was the subject of a lawsuit between the city and the building’s former owner.
Finally, a settlement was reached and the “hole” (former basement of the building) was filled in.
Green space is there for now.
The side of the building was decoratively plastered by the former owner of the destroyed building and periodically, the four squares are changed out with different artwork.
Right now, we have bovines.

Sumo Wrestler (294/365)

“A sculpture is just a painting cut out and stood up somewhere.”

François de la Rochefoucauld (French classical author, leading exponent of the Maxime, 1613-1680)

TIME:  5:47 PM
PLACE:  Front porch
SUBJECT:  Paper-mâché sculpture

Remember DramaQueen's art project “Bobert” she made back in March?  MonkeyBoy also made one during his 1st quarter art class.  It’s a sumo wrestler/striped/reminds-me-of-a-penguin/sculpture.  The weird thing?  MB named him “Bob” – When I mentioned DQ’s was named “Bobert”, he said he didn’t know that she had named hers that.  He just liked the name.  I’m not sure if I believe him or if he did that just to irritate his sister.  With MB you never know.

Wall O’ Veggies (213/365)

“You can learn many things from children.  How much patience you have, for instance.”

Franklin P. Jones quotes (American Businessman, 1887-1929)

TIME:  4:39 PM
PLACE:  Living room
SUBJECT:  StellaDella’s vegetable drawings

When I returned home this afternoon from work, SD was excited to show me the pictures she drew and colored while I was away.  They are lovely renditions of vegetables.  The only problem is that she used my (expensive) rubber stamp markers.  She was so proud of the bright colors.  And they DO look nice and colorful.  I just kept repeating to myself, “It’s only markers.  It’s only markers.  You can always buy new ones.” *Sigh*

Peeking Out (174/365)

Vampire: [about Jack Skellington, who is missing] I peeked behind the Cyclops' eye - I did! - But he wasn't there.

TIME:  10:28 AM
PLACE:  South Lawn, Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO
SUBJECT:  StellaDella & MonkeyBoy in Vito Acconci’s “Face of the Earth #3” 1988

I had my cast/splint removed this morning and am now in a brace for the next 4-6 weeks.  Physical therapy, 2-3 times a week, has also been prescribed.  After my appointment, as we were driving to Costco, I impulsively decided to stop for a quick visit to Laumeier Sculpture Park.  We (SD, MB & I) had never been before and it was a gorgeous day to go.  We were not there for long and didn’t see everything, but they really enjoyed the sculptures we did get to see.

PLACE:  Way Field, Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO
SUBJECT:  Alexander Liberman, The Way, 1972-80

Isn’t that ginormous?  It’s made from eighteen salvaged steel oil tanks.  Can you see MB wearing the green t-shirt and SD standing by him under the middle of the sculpture?  They want to go back.

”Bobert is my awesome art project I made in 2nd quarter. He was so good my art teacher kept him in the display case all 3rd quarter. I loved Art. Now I’m in Music. Yaya.” – DramaQueen

(Note:  I received an emergency text from DQ as she was on the afternoon bus, that I needed to go to the junior high school and pick up her art project – Any 2nd quarter art project needed to be picked up to make room for those made during the 3rd quarter.  If the projects were not retrieved by Friday afternoon, they would be thrown out.  Being the wonderful mother that I am, I complied with her request.)
