Originally built in 1898, this was a standpipe used to equalize water pressure for the water supply of the City of St. Louis. It was retired from use in 1929. 

A restoration was completed in 1999 and prior to COVID, it was open from April to November for tours.  Hopefully, it be able to re-open for tours again soon.  I'd like to take a tour and take photos from the top.  This one was taken from a moving car - HH was driving us north on S. Grand Avenue.

We took Dad to Pho Grand for dinner, then stopped at Ted Drewes for custard.

There was still some day light left when we drove east on the Poplar Street Bridge going into Illinois.

I experimented with the zoom on my cell phone camera.  It seems to work okay.

HH and I picked up my dad tonight and took him out to dinner.

We went to Mai Lee, a Vietnamese restaurant in St. Louis that was recommended to us.

It was nice to get out and eat dinner with my dad.

Soldiers Memorial (002/365)

SD and I visited the Soldiers Memorial to see their special exhibit, "World War I: St. Louis and the Great War." before it closed on Sunday.

I had been wanting to go see the Memorial since it reopened in November of 2018 after a 2-year, $30 million renovation.

Very glad we went.

SD and I had cat feeding duties while DQ is out of town. On our way back home from feeding the rodents this afternoon, the clouds and remainder of the daylight combined to make a picture taking moment of the Cathedral.

St. Elizabeth's Hospital used to stand in that large grassy area in front of the church.  I guess if it was still there, I wouldn't have this photo.

HH and I went to the Alton Farmers' & Artisans' Market this evening.

It is by the Jacoby Arts Center and this old bank building.

This building is definitely not as tall as the Flat Iron building in NYC, however, I've heard the floor plan is the same.  Also, this building sits on an incline which the Flat Iron does not.  

It operated as a banking facility until 1996 when it closed.

It is also apparently, a geocache site.

I volunteered to help out at a trivia night benefiting Eden’s Army, a charity established by my college roommate’s sister.

Eden’s Army helps families at the Cardiac Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. You can learn more here.

After my stint of selling all-you-can-drink wristbands, and before my other duties, I went out to my car to put some items away – the light was pretty sweet against the building.

Harter’s Crafts (015/365)

HH and I went to see the matinee showing of “The Martian” at the Lincoln.
We bought popcorn, of which I somehow managed to jam a hull between my teeth and gum within 5 seconds of eating my first handful.
Nevertheless, I thought the movie was pretty damn good.

Fair House (196/365)

HH and I ate supper at 10th Street Bakery with some friends.
When we left, the setting sun was throwing some nice light on the buildings.
Supposedly, this row house was originally located at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis as housing for the workers.
After the fair was over, it was dismantled and re-built here in town.

According to the 1925 City Directory, this building (1522 West Main St.) housed a bakery owned by a Louis C Seifferth.
Back in the early 1970’s, a bakery still operated there.
(although I do not remember the name)
I remember going inside with my mom while she bought pizza crusts.

However I know that it’s been around since at least 1965.

We took a day trip to New Harmony, Indiana today.  I expected the children to be completely bored.  Surprisingly, only one was cranky – DramaQueen (go figure).

Remember this bridge?  I drove across it in November of 2010.  It closed on May 21, 2012 due to structural deficiencies.  It’s still a cool looking bridge.

HH had a chicken and beer dance, DQ went to the high school football game, so that left me, MB, SD and our cousin, who was here playing with SD, to figure out something to eat.  We decided to go downtown and eat sushi.  After, we walked down to the ice cream shop and the three younger ones ate some ice cream.  There is balcony seating in the shop.  All the better to admire the original tin ceiling in the space.
