Pool of Memories(186/365)

20150705_190155[1]
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone…

Joni Mitchell, “Big Yellow Taxi”, Album: Ladies of the Canyon, 1970

TIME: 7:01 PM
PLACE: Around town
SUBJECT:  Site of the former city pool

This is where our city swimming pool used to be.
This is where I learned to swim.
This is where I worked in the bathhouse the summer I was 15.
This is where the
basket I now have in my pantry was used.
Now it’s gone.

TIME:  11:25 & 11:26 AM
PLACE:  Splash City
SUBJECT:  StellaDella & MonkeyBoy

SD’s Girl Scout troop had planned a trip to Splash City today.  Unfortunately, the weather did not get the memo.  It was a bit brisk!  Hard to believe that it is the last day of June and it only got to the mid 70’s.  We only stayed about 2-1/2 hours – SD & MB were pretty chilled.

We celebrated MB’s birthday at the pool from this evening with a party for him.  We had 18 classmates along with family to toast the birthday boy.  There was pizza, ice cream, cupcakes and lots of swimming.
As you can see, HH even did some diving.
Impressive!

It was chicken-wing night at the pool – 50 cent wings or a dozen for $5.  HH and I arrived early to get a good table.  The girls swam.  Ate wings.  Swam. Ate a candy bar. Swam.  I drank a couple of Squirt and vodka concoctions.  HH and I even won the 50/50 drawing.  Quite possibly a perfect evening.

Summer Afternoon (219/365)

“Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”

Henry James (1843-1916), U.S. author. Quoted in A Backward Glance, ch. 10, Edith Wharton (1934). Remark during "one perfect afternoon we spent at Bodiam" (Bodiam Castle, Kent, England).

TIME:  1:57 to 2:20 PM
PLACE:  American Legion Post
SUBJECT:  The kids and a dragonfly

MB’s Boy Scout troop had a “Day At The Lake” get together.  The kids and I went, while HH stayed home to deal with the plumbing.  Of course, SD and MB went straight into the lake.  DQ, although she wore a swim suit, did not want to go in, because she just showered and did not want to smell like lake water.  That’s a 13-year old girl for you.  Of course, her brother took that as a challenge and dragged her into the water anyway.  That’s a 12-year old brother for you.

Spot The Difference (153/365)

PLACE: Riverchase, Fenton, MO & living room
SUBJECT: My legs and my wrapped wrist

Did you see the difference?  A broken left wrist – more specifically, a closed fracture of navicular (scaphoid) bone of wrist and distal radius fracture.  Nice. huh?  Unfortunately, I don't have a fun story to go with it. I was at Riverchase (a recreation center) in Fenton, MO and was walking back to my lounge chair, hit a slick spot where the concrete slopes into the water and down I went. Luckily my sister (an ER nurse) was with me and got me into the SSM St. Clare ER right away. I'll see an orthopedic surgeon on Monday. Good news is it's my left wrist - I'm right handed - AND I've got Percocet!

The kids and I, my sister and her 2 children and my nephew, niece and 2 of my niece’s friends, all went to the water park today.  It was a gorgeous day, sun and blue skies, temps in the low to mid eighties and low humidity.  We spent much of our time in the wave pool.  SD and I did some floating on inner tubes down the lazy river and there was plenty of water sliding.  We arrived back home just in time for MonkeyBoy to change into his baseball uniform and head to his final game of the season.  It was a winner.

Gonna stay cool, cool, cool at the swimming pool.

SUBJECT:  StellaDella in the pool

I caved and purchased an 8-foot quick set pool on Tuesday and HandsomeHusband helped me set it up yesterday.  It’s been a big hit, not only with my kids but many others in the neighborhood.  I knew that it would draw children like a magnet.  I am going to be the wicked witch of R--- Avenue and limit the number of guests allowed in the pool.  I feel bad telling the neighborhood kids “No” (I’m pretty sure that many are home by themselves all day due to working parents and are bored and looking for something to do), but I am not operating a swimming/latch-key establishment for the neighborhood this summer.  Did I just sound like my mother?  I believe I did.  I guess it’s appropriate being that it would have been her 68th birthday today.

Poolish Pleasures (175/365)

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air…”

Ralph Waldo Emerson (American Poet, Lecturer and Essayist, 1803-1882)

TIME: 2:00 PM
PLACE:  Millstadt Pool
SUBJECT:  Monkeyboy

Our field trip this week was swimming.  We went to the Millstadt pool with my sister and her kids.  My sister-in-law and nephew joined us shortly after we arrived.  They have a wading pool area for the little kids, however it was closed today due to an "incident", so everyone was in the main pool.  In the "deep end" with the diving board, they rotate between letting people jump off the diving board and letting people swim in the area.  This is MB jumping off the side during the swimming time.  The kids had a good time - even though we forgot our towels at home! Doh!  I made sure that tons of sunscreen was liberally applied before we ventured out into the sun.  Around 3pm, dark clouds and thunder rolled in...closing the pool for the day.
