TIME:  2:39 PM
PLACE:  Back porch
SUBJECT:  Dried ear of corn

Although I didn’t decorate with them them this fall, in the past I would place dried cornstalks on my front porch.  In December, when we would take them down, I pulled the ears of corn off the stalks to feed them to the squirrels.  Earlier this summer, while trying to organize the basement, I discovered a whole container of dried ears of corn that I had apparently forgotten about.  We’ve been leaving them out in the backyard and our porch for the squirrels this fall.  They are loving it ~ it’s like they have hit the corn jackpot…lucky squirrels.

I'm missing a cultural reference. Why would you be decorating with corn stalks?

Lucy - Just to decorate the front porch and home for Halloween/Autumn/Harvest time. Here is a link with some corn stalk decorations.

Thanks for the link.

We don't have anything like this here - at least I've never seen anything like it. The nearest is that the insides of Churches are decorated with vegetables for harvest festivals. Nowadays, tinned food is included because so few people are able to grow their own - but they still want to give thanks that they have food.
