Flawed (267/365)

“I cling to my imperfection, as the very essence of my being.”

Anatole France (Jacques Anatole François Thibault, French poet, journalist, and novelist, 1844-1924), The Garden of Epicurus, 1894

TIME:  2:50 PM
PLACE:  The study
SUBJECT:  My thumbs

Today you get to see one of my flaws, my thumbs.  HandsomeHusband took this photo for me.  As you can see, my left thumb is not as long and has a visibly shorter nail bed than my right thumb.  It was first pointed out to me during grade school.  My class was working on a project that involved tracing our hands when a classmate pointed out to me that my thumbs were different.  I still remember the hot feeling of embarrassment over my flaw.  Even now, when I get manicures, I always apologize for the shape of my thumb and I still have the habit of hiding it, tucking my thumb under my palm so that no one sees it.

You are in good company. If you start noticing other thumbnails, you will realize many people have different nails. My siblings have the same problem. We carry one thumbnail from my mother and one from my father. I was different. My nail differences are my toenails. My thumbnails are alike. Yet, what difference does it make what your nails look like? They are part of what makes you, you. It is genetic. As long as you have functioning nails and they serve a purpose, who cares?? Now, if you had some say so over your nails, they you could apologize. But you don't. No need to apologize. This may very well fall under the category of: Don't sweat the small stuff . . . and it is all small stuff!! :D

Oops. That should read: *Then* you could apologize.

Iona said it very well! Besides - you could have much worse flaws than your thumbs!
My sister and husband adopted from Russia. Their daughter has one ear that sticks out a little more than the other and they were told they could cancel the adoption because she was "defective". We all love her in spite of her "defect!"

Iona - Oh, I know in the grand scheme of things it's not something to be embarrassed or worried about. It's funny how I still hide it though...old habits die hard!

bentonflocke - HH is always there when I need him! Although he did tell me I wasn't right in the head after he read this post.

Mari - I'm sure your sister and her husband looked at them like they were nuts when told that. That's crazy!
