Empty Theatre (114/365)

TIME: 9:40 am
PLACE: Scottish Rite Valley of Southern Illinois
SUBJECT: Theatre seating

*~*~*

The local Scottish Rite is downsizing and selling their building and contents.

The content sale was today.  HH and I picked up a few things.

While there, I wandered into the auditorium/theatre to check out the colorful seating and flooring one last time.

Outdoor Dining Still Not Optimal (051/365)

TIME: 2:05 pm
PLACE: Downtown
SUBJECT: Table & Chairs

*~*~*

We had sun and warmer weather today!

Even though it is warmer, outdoor dining would still be a bit brisk and not really a good option.

Luckily, the state is in Phase 4 and we can dine indoors again.

Snow Day (046/365)

TIME: 1:17 pm
PLACE: Driving south on 159
SUBJECT: Tree line

*~*~*

The snow they were talking about arrived.

Lots of the white stuff all over the place.

HH had to drop off some paperwork south of town and I decided to go with him.

The roads were not good.

In fact, we had difficulties reversing out of the driveway of the place where he took his paperwork.  We had to have help getting out.  But, eventually, we made it.

SUBJECT: Chairs outside Rural King

We stopped by Rural King while we were out - why?  Because it was there and I had to use the facilities.

It was cold - like low single digits cold.

It was so cold, I wore a hat. I NEVER wear hats.

Here is a photo of me in my hat.  In the restroom. At Rural King.

I do exist.

I Think I Got a Good Deal (260/366)

TIME: 8:55 pm
PLACE: Living room
SUBJECT: Chair

*~*~*

I miss going to auctions, estate sales and flea markets.  Stupid COVID.

So, to feed my urge to purchase items I don't need, I've been checking out auctions near me on the Hibid.com website.

Late Sunday afternoon, I am browsing an auction that was to close in about 4 hours.  On the last page of items up for bid, I come across a lot of 2 chairs.  These chairs have no bids.  They are labeled in the auction as "OUX chairs".  They looked pretty mid-century to me and also look very similar to furniture my brother has in his living room <-- which is definitely authentic mid-century furniture.

So I Google - God bless Google - I do not find "OUX" chairs but do find plenty of "DUX" chairs. Very expensive chairs from what I can see.  I found a set of six, which has two like the ones in the auction, with an asking price of $3,295 (free shipping though!) or about $549 a chair.

I figure, what the heck, and placed a max bid of $50.

I got them for $32 plus a 15% bidders fee. I'm still a little giddy!

I picked them up today. The cushions need to be cleaned &/or replaced, there are some white marks here and there on the frame and the teak wood may need some Danish oil to bring back the shine, but overall they look good. I believe they are Folke Ohlsson designed chairs made in Sweden and imported for DUX.

Here is a photo of the whole chair - it's not an artsy photo and I ask that you please ignore the dog scratches on my front door.

Damage (168/366)

TIME: 8:44 pm
PLACE: Living room
SUBJECT: Chewed chair

*~*~*

Remember this chair?

Mr. Mulder did a some damage after we first saved him. I was planning on applying some wood putty, sanding and staining to repair it.

Now, enter Miss Scully.

She added her own work to Mr. Mulder's.

Grrrrrr...

It's going to take a bit more to fix now.

Lunchtime Shadows (237/365)

TIME: 1:46 PM
PLACE: Work
SUBJECT: Outdoor patio

I like to eat a late lunch, usually about 1:30 or later.
This way, when I’m finished, I’ve only about 2 hours of work until I get to leave for the day @ 4pm.
I opted to eat outside today – it was warm, but I was alone and the shadows were nice and crisp on the ground..

SUBJECT:  Ruined chair and reason why

I bought this recliner about a year before the HH brought home the dog.  That means I had about one year of owning a nice piece of furniture – one that was un-molested by doggie nails and un-permeated by doggie odor.  That is so not the case now.

SUBJECT:  Tessa on a kitchen chair

I just arrived home from a trivia night.  We came in second place – Yea us.  Our prize was $100, so basically we all received our entrance money back ($10).  Sweet!  As I walked into the door, all the animals greeted me – I am so loved.  I was surprised that Tessa was part of the bunch.  She usually stays upstairs when the dog is out and about.  It’s only taken her 5 years, but she’s finally getting braver.  Right after I took this photo, she hissed at Oreo (who had dared to walk under the kitchen table to get by my side), jumped off of the chair and disappeared into the basement.

Restaurant Tile (263/365)

“I went to this restaurant last night that was set up like a big buffet in the shape of an Ouija board. You'd think about what kind of food you want, and the table would move across the floor to it.”

TIME:  6:52 PM
PLACE:  Steak ‘n Shake
SUBJECT:  Tile floor

We ate supper this evening at Steak ‘n Shake: DramaQueen’s choice.  My mom *hearted* this place big time.  Whenever we would go, she usually ordered the same thing - a double steakburger with onion and mustard, their tiny, crispy, shoestring French fries and a chocolate shake.  Come to think of it, when I was pregnant with DramaQueen, I would eat here almost every Friday night, usually accompanied by my sister.  Maybe that’s why DQ loves this place so much now.

”Occasionally we all inherit, or are given, or get something or some things that are too good to use for a variety of seemingly sound but really quite silly reasons-they’re heirlooms or too rare or too expensive or too fragile or too pretty. The result is heirloom linen handed down from generation to generation that falls apart when some benighted heiress decides to air it. While I’m glad that past generations saved some things we now enjoy, we are enjoying them by using them instead of carefully storing them for our kids-in turn to store. Unused beautiful things are a waste.”

SUBJECT:  …and glider after.

Finally, after an unplanned break (Bwahahaha! *wipes tears from eyes*  Get it? I “broke” my wrist and there was a “break” in finishing my project? *sigh* I do love me a good pun), I finished restoring my paternal grandmother’s metal glider.  It only took three trips to the hardware store – the first to pick up the bolts, nuts and lock washers; a second to pick up plastic caps that I forgot the first time; then a third time for one more bolt and two more nuts because apparently I couldn’t count correctly.  But, I got her put together and now she sits on the front porch for our gliding pleasure.

Now lets see her again from a slightly different angle…before:

after.

And here are some very early befores:

This photo was taken in the summer of 1964.  My great-aunt Teresa (my paternal grandfather’s sister) is sitting on the glider, my paternal grandmother (Ignazia or Edna) is sitting next to her on the metal chair and that’s my mom sitting in the lawn chair on the far right - she’s pregnant with my oldest brother Michael.  That glider and the chair have been around for awhile…I’m honored to have them on my porch.

My Favorite Son And My Chair (147/365)

MB’s last full day of grade school was capped off with a ceremony honoring the 6th grade students who are moving on to junior high in the fall.  Certificates were given to students who best represented the district’s different monthly life skills for character words.  MB was recognized for exemplifying Self-Discipline - “..thinking about your words and actions and then making choices that are right for you and others”.  Yes, I teared up during the ceremony.  That’s what mom’s do.
~*~*~
And, because I am excited about it….here is the freshly painted metal chair and an old pillow with a newly sewn cover I whipped up this evening.  That’s one summer project off my ever expanding list – now I need to start on the glider.

Zubaz Pants.  Just wow.  *closes eyes and shakes head hard to clear image of those pants featured in that link from my head*  Ok…way back when, my mom purchased this chair at an estate sale for a then 3 year-old DQ.  Until this evening, it had the original white frame and faded pink velvet tufted upholstery.  Now, thanks to the wonders of spray paint, new fabric, foam cushioning and an electric staple gun, DQ has the chair of her dreams.  Here are before and after photos to help you better appreciate the transformation:

Prepped and Primed (138/365)

2011 05 18 IMG_1784w
[talking to the chassis]
Harry Hogge: I'm gonna give you an engine low to the ground... extra thick oil pan to cut the wind from underneath you. It'll give you thirty or forty more horsepower. I'm gonna give you a fuel line that'll hold an extra gallon of gas. I'm gonna shave half an inch off you and shape you like a bullet. I'll get you primed, painted and weighed, and you'll be ready to go out on that racetrack. Hear me? You're gonna be perfect.

TIME:  7:12 PM
PLACE:  Back yard
SUBJECT:  Rust-oleum primer & metal chair seat

This evening, I began to prep an old metal chair for a new coat of paint.  The hardest part was removing the rusted bolts that held the seat to the frame.  Luckily, I was able to find some penetrating oil in the garage that worked wonders.  I sanded the frame and seat with some 100 grit sandpaper, wiped it all down and sprayed them with a coat of primer.  I plan to paint the frame white, but I haven’t decided on the color for the seat.  This chair, along with a metal glider that is also on the project list, belonged to my paternal grandmother (*Light bulb moment* I’ll call Dad and find out the original color).  They have been sitting against the back of my house for a couple of years…it’s about time I got off my duff and made them pretty for the front porch.

MonkeyBoy has been sick the last two days…nothing messy, just achy and a slight fever.  He’s been sleeping a lot.  I’m thinking he will be staying home again tomorrow. ~*~*~  This morning, I had a dentist and haircut appointment.  I get to go back to the dentist next Tuesday because my one and only filling needs to be redone.  The tooth was originally worked on when I was in high school, so I guess that my parents got their money’s worth from the original dental work. ~*~*~  Jack has been sleeping on the orange chair most of the evening – I think he blends in rather well.
